An Italian Renaissance engraving depicting the Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and the infant Saint John the Baptist in a domestic setting.
This engraving depicts a domestic scene involving the Holy Family, Saint Elizabeth, and the infant Saint John the Baptist. Giacomo Francia, a painter and printmaker active in Bologna, demonstrates the influence of the Bolognese school and the broader stylistic currents of the Italian Renaissance. The composition is structured around a central figure of the infant John the Baptist, who stands upon a pedestal while interacting with a yarn winder. This inclusion of domestic equipment provides a grounded, human quality to the sacred narrative.
To the left, Saint Elizabeth sits in profile, gesturing towards the child. Behind her, a female figure observes the interaction. On the right, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child, who is swaddled in traditional cloth. Saint Joseph stands in the background, completing the group. The artist employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the forms, drapery, and architectural elements of the interior space. The lines are controlled, creating a clear sense of volume and spatial depth despite the monochromatic nature of the medium.
Francia was the son of Francesco Francia, a prominent figure in the artistic life of Bologna. His work often reflects the classicising tendencies of his father, combined with an interest in the graphic arts that were circulating throughout Italy during the early sixteenth century. The print captures a moment of quiet activity, moving away from more formalised iconographic representations of the Holy Family. The attention to the textures of the clothing and the geometric structure of the yarn winder shows a preoccupation with the material world. This piece serves as an example of the technical proficiency required in early Italian printmaking, where the engraver had to translate the tonal qualities of painting into a system of lines and shadows.
