A classic benizuri-e woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu depicting three performers engaged in the traditional Harugoma Odori dance.
Ishikawa Toyonobu was a prominent figure in the mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e tradition. This print, titled The Hobby Horse Dance (Harugoma Odori), captures a performance scene featuring three figures engaged in a traditional folk dance. The work is executed in the benizuri-e style, a technique that employs a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to a monochrome base. This method preceded the full-colour nishiki-e prints that would later define the genre.
The composition focuses on the rhythmic movement of the performers. One figure holds a small drum, while another plays a shamisen, and the third manipulates a hobby horse prop. The figures wear matching headscarves and patterned kimono, suggesting a coordinated troupe. Toyonobu uses clean, fluid lines to define the contours of the garments and the expressive postures of the dancers. The background remains neutral, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the performers and their instruments.
Toyonobu is recognised for his depictions of beautiful women, or bijin-ga, often characterised by elongated proportions and graceful stances. In this print, the artist balances the decorative patterns of the textiles with the dynamic energy of the dance. The use of negative space and the controlled application of colour reflect the aesthetic priorities of the period. This print provides a clear view into the performative culture of Edo-period Japan, where folk traditions were frequently adapted for the entertainment of urban audiences. The print remains a representative example of the technical transition in woodblock printing during the mid-1700s, showing the shift toward multi-colour printing processes.
