A refined etching by Félix Bracquemond, created as a study for the iconic Service Rousseau dinnerware set, showcasing the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e.
This etching by Félix Bracquemond is a study for the famous 'Service Rousseau', a dinnerware set commissioned by the Parisian restaurateur François-Louis Rousseau. Bracquemond, a key figure in the French etching revival, drew significant inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints, particularly the works of Hokusai. This influence is evident in the economy of line and the deliberate, asymmetrical composition of the rooster.
The artist captures the bird with a focus on essential form rather than realistic volume. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the curve of the body and the texture of the feathers with minimal strokes. By stripping away background detail, Bracquemond directs the viewer to the posture of the animal, which occupies the frame with a sense of quiet alertness. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to translate the aesthetic principles of ukiyo-e into the medium of Western printmaking.
Bracquemond was instrumental in introducing Japanese art to his contemporaries in Paris. His work on the 'Service Rousseau' represents a synthesis of European ceramic tradition and Eastern graphic style. This print serves as a record of that creative process, showing the initial graphic conception before its transfer onto porcelain. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface emphasises the clarity of his draughtsmanship. It is a piece that reflects the shift in nineteenth-century art towards a more decorative and graphic sensibility, moving away from the heavy academic traditions of the period.
