Antonie Sminck Pitloo, a Dutch painter who settled in Naples, became a central figure in the development of the Posillipism movement. This work depicts the Grotto of Posillipo, an ancient tunnel carved through the tuff rock that served as a primary route between Naples and Pozzuoli. Pitloo captures the dramatic scale of the geological formation, contrasting the towering, sun-drenched rock walls with the deep, cavernous darkness of the tunnel entrance.

The composition employs a vertical orientation to emphasise the height of the cliffs. Vegetation clings to the upper reaches of the stone, adding texture to the sheer surfaces. In the foreground, Pitloo includes figures of local inhabitants and travellers, providing a sense of scale and daily life within this historic passage.
