A sixteenth-century Indian miniature painting depicting a scene from the Bhagavata Purana, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold.
This folio originates from the Isarda Bhagavata Purana, a series of illustrations depicting the life of Krishna. The work belongs to the early Rajasthani tradition, specifically associated with the style prevalent in the mid-sixteenth century. The composition captures a narrative moment where the gopis, or cowherd maidens, stand in the river while pleading with Krishna, who has climbed a tree with their garments.
The visual language employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period. The river is rendered with stylised, swirling patterns that suggest movement, while the figures are depicted with sharp profiles and expressive gestures. Krishna is painted in his characteristic blue hue, contrasting against the deep red background of the riverbank. The surrounding flora, including palm-like trees and lotus flowers, provides a decorative frame for the central action. The use of gold leaf in the upper register, where the Sanskrit text is inscribed, indicates the high status of the original manuscript.
Technically, the artist uses opaque watercolours to achieve saturated fields of colour. The figures are defined by firm, dark outlines that separate them from the water and the background. This specific series is recognised for its departure from the earlier Persian-influenced styles, moving towards a more indigenous aesthetic that would define later Rajput painting. The scene balances the devotional nature of the text with a rhythmic, almost theatrical arrangement of the figures. The repetition of the gopis' poses creates a sense of unity, while the inclusion of small animals at the riverbanks adds a naturalistic touch to the otherwise stylised environment. This print captures the precise detail of the original pigment application and the aged texture of the paper, offering a clear view of the artistic conventions of the sixteenth-century Indian court.
