A powerful interpretation of Delacroix's biblical scene, painted by Van Gogh in 1890 using his signature expressive brushwork and bold colour palette.
Painted in May 1890 during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work is a direct interpretation of a lithograph by Eugène Delacroix. Van Gogh held Delacroix in high regard, often looking to the French Romantic master for guidance on colour theory and emotional expression. While the original lithograph was monochromatic, Van Gogh applied his own palette to the scene, utilising his characteristic brushwork to animate the figures.
The composition depicts the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, where a traveller assists a wounded man. The Samaritan is shown lifting the injured figure onto his horse, a moment of physical exertion and compassion. Van Gogh employs a palette dominated by blues, yellows, and earthy tones, which contrast with the starker, more dramatic lighting often found in his other works from this period. The swirling, rhythmic application of paint creates a sense of movement across the surface, particularly in the rocky background and the folds of the figures' garments.
Van Gogh produced this piece while recovering from a severe mental health crisis. His choice to copy works by artists he admired, such as Delacroix, Rembrandt, and Millet, provided him with a structured way to continue painting when his own creative energy felt depleted. By translating the work of others into his own visual language, he explored the possibilities of colour to convey narrative weight. The painting remains a clear example of his engagement with the history of art, demonstrating how he absorbed the techniques of his predecessors to inform his own practice. The work is currently held in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
