Beschreibung
A quiet, atmospheric lithograph by Edouard Vuillard, capturing the interplay of light and form in a garden setting with a muted, earthy palette.
Edouard Vuillard, a member of the Nabis group, is recognised for his ability to transform domestic and intimate spaces into atmospheric compositions. This work, depicting the garden outside his workshop, demonstrates his characteristic approach to colour and form during the 1890s. Rather than relying on traditional perspective, Vuillard flattens the pictorial space, allowing the textures and muted tones to dictate the viewer's engagement with the scene.
The composition is defined by a series of interlocking planes. The architectural elements, such as the workshop structure and the glass-paned windows, are integrated into the surrounding foliage. His use of lithography allows for a soft, painterly quality, where the boundaries between the interior space and the exterior garden become porous. The palette is restrained, favouring earthy greens, ochres, and muted browns, which contribute to the quiet, observational nature of the piece.
Vuillard often focused on the mundane aspects of daily life, finding visual interest in the patterns of light and shadow within his immediate environment. In this print, the garden is not merely a backdrop but a central component of the artist's private world. The lack of rigid detail encourages a focus on the overall mood and the interplay of shapes. This approach aligns with the Nabis philosophy, which prioritised the decorative potential of art and the expression of subjective experience over strict naturalistic representation. The work offers a glimpse into the artist's personal surroundings, captured with a sensitivity that avoids unnecessary ornamentation. It remains a clear example of the transition from the structured compositions of the nineteenth century toward the more abstract sensibilities that would define early twentieth-century modernism.

The Garden Outside the Workshop - Edouard Vuillard
Artist Biography
Edouard Vuillard
He joined the Nabis in the early 1890s, a group of young painters who took their name from the Hebrew word for prophets. The others (Bonnard, Denis, Serusier) were drawn to mysticism and esoteric philosophy. Vuillard was drawn to the interior. His mother's workroom, with its bolts of fabric, wallpaper patterns, and women in patterned dresses, became his subject. The paintings flatten space: the figure merges with the wallpaper, the dress dissolves into the upholstery, the room becomes a single surface of competing patterns. Critics called the approach Intimism.
He painted almost exclusively domestic scenes: rooms, tables, women sewing, women reading. The scale is modest. The colours are muted. There is no drama, no allegory, no mythology. The work assumes that a woman sitting in a chair in a room with good light is enough to make a painting, which it is.
He never married. He lived with his mother until she died and then lived alone. In the late twentieth century, historians began to reassess his decorative work (screens, murals, theatre sets for Lugne-Poe's Theatre de l'Oeuvre) and recognised that the small domestic paintings were not minor work but a deliberate programme: the interior as a subject equal to landscape or history.
