Gustave Caillebotte painted this scene during his time in Petit Gennevillers, a commune on the banks of the Seine. He moved there in the early 1880s, finding inspiration in the gardens and the river environment. This work captures a domestic view, focusing on the interplay between the cultivated flora and the architecture of the village.

The composition is structured by a horizontal wall that separates the foreground garden from the houses behind. The pink roofs provide a distinct colour contrast against the muted greens and blues of the foliage and sky.
