A detailed 1893 etching by Félix Bracquemond, depicting a cockerel with political inscriptions related to the Franco-Russian Alliance.
Félix Bracquemond was a central figure in the nineteenth-century revival of etching in France. His technical mastery is evident in this study of a cockerel, where he employs a variety of line weights to define the texture of the plumage and the anatomy of the bird. The work, dated 1893, captures the subject with a high degree of naturalism, focusing on the contrast between the soft, downy feathers of the breast and the more rigid, sharp details of the talons and beak.
The inscription 'Vive le Tsar!' at the top left corner provides a specific historical context, referencing the Franco-Russian Alliance of the 1890s. This political gesture, combined with the dedication to 'Ch. Royer' and the mention of 'Semaine Russe' at the bottom, suggests the print was produced as a commemorative or personal gift during a period of diplomatic warmth between the two nations. Bracquemond often used his printmaking skills to engage with contemporary events, moving beyond simple animal portraiture to include social and political commentary.
Visually, the composition is striking for its use of deep shadow and light. The background is rendered with dense, cross-hatched lines that push the figure of the cock forward, giving it a sculptural presence on the page. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the focus to remain on the physical characteristics of the bird. The etching demonstrates Bracquemond's ability to balance precise observation with the expressive potential of the copper plate. His work remains a primary example of the high standards of French printmaking during the late nineteenth century, reflecting both the technical rigour of the period and the specific cultural climate of the time.
