A satirical 1795 etching by Isaac Cruikshank mocking the French occupation of Amsterdam and the seizure of Dutch wealth.
This etching by Isaac Cruikshank, published in London on 29 January 1795, offers a satirical commentary on the French occupation of the Netherlands. The title, 'The first ARTICLES in REQUISITION at AMSTERDAM or the SANS CULOTTS become touts CULOTTS', plays upon the French revolutionary term 'sans-culottes' (those without breeches) by depicting the French soldiers seizing Dutch wealth to fill their own trousers.
Cruikshank employs the visual language of late eighteenth-century British caricature to mock the hypocrisy of the French revolutionary forces. The central figure, a French soldier, is shown with his breeches comically distended, overflowing with gold coins taken from a distressed Dutchman. To the left, another soldier drinks gin, while in the background, further scenes of plunder and social disruption unfold. The use of speech bubbles provides specific narrative context, with the Dutchman lamenting the loss of his property and the French soldiers justifying their actions through the rhetoric of equality and liberty.
The composition is typical of the period's political prints, prioritising narrative clarity and grotesque exaggeration over anatomical precision. The figures are rendered with expressive, often distorted features to convey their respective roles as aggressors or victims. The hand-colouring, applied to the etching, adds a layer of visual urgency to the scene, drawing the eye to the spilled gold and the absurdly oversized garments. This work provides a window into the British public's perception of the French Revolutionary Wars, reflecting the anxieties and prejudices of the time regarding the expansion of French influence across Europe. It remains a document of the era's political climate, capturing the sharp wit and biting social critique that defined the work of Cruikshank and his contemporaries.
