Beschreibung
A study of the rural landscape near Gruchy, Normandy, rendered in ink and watercolour by Jean-François Millet.
This work depicts the rural surroundings of Gruchy, the birthplace of Jean-François Millet in Normandy. Millet returned to this region throughout his career, finding inspiration in the modest farmsteads and the rugged terrain of the Cotentin Peninsula. The composition features a winding track leading towards a cluster of stone buildings, framed by dense foliage and low stone walls typical of the Norman countryside.
Millet employs a combination of ink outlines and watercolour washes to define the scene. The line work is rapid and expressive, capturing the structural elements of the farm and the undulating ground with economy. The palette remains grounded in earth tones, with muted greens, ochres, and greys reflecting the atmospheric conditions of the northern French coast. The sky is rendered with light, gestural strokes, suggesting a breezy day over the fields.
Unlike his more formal oil paintings, this piece offers a direct view of Millet's working method. The visible ink lines provide a clear sense of the artist's hand, while the watercolour application remains loose and unrefined. This approach allows for a sense of immediacy, capturing the character of the site rather than a polished representation. The work demonstrates the artist's focus on the quiet, everyday reality of rural life, a theme that occupied him for much of his career. By focusing on the specific topography of his home, Millet connects his artistic output to his personal history. The print preserves the texture of the original paper and the subtle variations in the ink, providing a clear view of the artist's technique in a medium he used to record his observations during his travels back to his family home.

The Farm at Gruchy - Jean-François Millet
Artist Biography
Jean Francois Millet
Two village priests educated him in Latin and literature before he was pulled back to farm work. He eventually reached Paris, where he lived in poverty for a period, painting in a damp cellar. His first wife died of tuberculosis three years after their 1841 marriage. He later had nine children with Catherine Lemaire.
The Gleaners (1857) and The Angelus (1857-59) made him famous and controversial. Both depict peasants at work with a dignity that unnerved the bourgeoisie, who saw political radicalism in the simple act of painting agricultural labourers as worthy subjects. The Angelus became one of the most widely reproduced images in the world.
Van Gogh was obsessed with him. While in the asylum at Saint-Remy in late 1889 and early 1890, Van Gogh made twenty-one copies of Millet's paintings over three months, translating them into his own colour and brushwork. Millet died in 1875, co-founder of the Barbizon school and the painter who gave peasant life a permanent place in art.
