A detailed pen and ink drawing by Flemish master Jan Wierix, depicting the biblical expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
Jan Wierix, a member of a prominent family of engravers and draughtsmen in Antwerp, demonstrates his technical precision in this pen and ink drawing. The composition depicts the moment Adam and Eve are driven from the Garden of Eden by an angel. Wierix employs a fine, calligraphic line to define the figures and the surrounding fauna, reflecting the meticulous approach common to Flemish artists of the late sixteenth century.
The scene is populated with a variety of animals, including a lion, a peacock, and a bull, which occupy the foreground alongside the fleeing figures. This inclusion of diverse creatures serves to establish the setting as an earthly paradise, now lost to the protagonists. The background features a distant, rocky horizon, rendered with lighter strokes to suggest atmospheric depth. The angel, positioned in the upper left, is framed by clouds, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal movement of Adam and Eve as they exit toward the right.
Wierix was known for his ability to work on a small scale, often producing prints that required close inspection to appreciate the density of detail. This drawing exhibits the characteristic clarity of his style, where every element, from the foliage to the musculature of the figures, is articulated with deliberate strokes. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer on the draughtsmanship and the narrative action. The work is signed by the artist in the lower left corner, a common practice for Wierix, who took pride in his professional identity as a master of the burin and pen. This piece provides an example of the Northern Mannerist interest in combining biblical themes with a high degree of naturalistic observation, particularly in the rendering of the animal kingdom.
