A detailed sixteenth-century engraving depicting the biblical expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
This engraving, titled The Expulsion from Paradise, originates from the circle of the Dutch cartographer and printmaker Gerard de Jode. It depicts the biblical narrative of Adam and Eve being driven from the Garden of Eden by an angel. The composition follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking, where figures are rendered with anatomical precision and dramatic movement. The angel, positioned on the left, gestures with authority, while Adam and Eve are shown in a state of hurried departure, their expressions conveying distress.
The background features a pastoral setting, including a lion and a stag, which provides a contrast to the central human drama. A serpent lies in the foreground, referencing the preceding temptation. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Angelus exilio miseros castigat acerbo, Raptas sed sero poma tulisse dolent', provides a moralising commentary on the scene, typical of the period's interest in combining classical learning with religious instruction. The engraving technique demonstrates the fine, controlled lines characteristic of the era, allowing for subtle shading and texture in the foliage and the figures' musculature.
As a publisher and engraver, de Jode was instrumental in the dissemination of biblical imagery throughout Europe. This work reflects the technical rigour of the Antwerp school, where printmakers often collaborated to produce series of illustrations for religious texts. The clarity of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the figures demonstrate the aesthetic priorities of the time, focusing on narrative legibility and the clear communication of theological themes. This print remains a representative example of how sixteenth-century artists interpreted foundational narratives through the medium of copperplate engraving, balancing the demands of artistic composition with the requirements of didactic storytelling.
