This engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES depicts Saint Luke, one of the four Evangelists. The artist, active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century, is recognised for his technical precision and contribution to the development of early European printmaking. Master ES was among the first to utilise the burin with such control, allowing for a sophisticated range of tonal values through cross-hatching and varied line weights.

In this composition, Saint Luke is shown in a seated position, accompanied by his traditional attribute, the winged ox. The figure is draped in heavy, voluminous robes, rendered with careful attention to the fall of fabric and the weight of the material.
