This work depicts the Erythraean Sibyl, a prophetic figure from classical antiquity who was often incorporated into Christian iconography during the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. The figure is presented within a narrow, arched frame, suggesting her placement as part of a larger polyptych structure. She wears a voluminous white garment with heavy, realistic folds, topped by a dark mantle and a complex, wrapped headpiece.

Jan van Eyck employs his characteristic precision in the rendering of textures, from the soft fabric of the turban to the subtle play of light across the figure's hands and face. A scroll unfurls above her head, bearing Latin text that identifies her role and prophetic nature. The composition is contained within a simulated stone niche, a technique used by the artist to create a sense of three-dimensional space on a flat surface. The lighting is directed and controlled, casting soft shadows that define the volume of the figure against the dark background of the niche.

As a master of the Northern Renaissance, Van Eyck prioritised observation and technical control. The attention to detail in the jewellery and the specific arrangement of the drapery reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Burgundian court. This panel is part of the exterior shutters of the Ghent Altarpiece, which remains one of the most significant examples of oil painting from the fifteenth century. The inclusion of pagan sibyls alongside Old Testament prophets was a common practice in ecclesiastical art, intended to demonstrate the universal anticipation of the coming of Christ. The work demonstrates the transition from Gothic stylisation toward the heightened naturalism that defined the Flemish school.
