Henri Boutet, often referred to as the master of the Parisian woman, captures the atmosphere of the city at the close of the nineteenth century in this drypoint and etching. The work depicts a solitary female figure walking through a dimly lit street, her silhouette rendered in deep, velvety blacks that contrast with the soft, diffused glow of gas lamps. Boutet was well known for his ability to convey the mood of the Belle Époque, focusing on the fashion and social habits of the Parisian bourgeoisie and the demi-monde.
The composition relies on the interplay between shadow and light, a technique that allows the artist to suggest the damp, nocturnal environment of a Parisian boulevard without the need for excessive detail. The figure, dressed in the high-collared fashion of the period, stands as a quiet observer of the urban environment.
