A detailed nineteenth-century steel engraving of the Dogana in Venice, based on a painting by Canaletto from the Royal Collection.
This steel engraving, titled The Dogana, Venice, was published by George Virtue in London during the nineteenth century. It is a reproduction of a painting by Canaletto held in the Royal Collection. The print captures the iconic customs house at the entrance to the Grand Canal, rendered with the precision characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century engraving techniques.
In the foreground, figures occupy a stone terrace, providing a sense of scale to the architectural expanse. The middle ground features the calm waters of the Venetian lagoon, populated by various sailing vessels and gondolas. The Dogana da Mar, with its distinctive tower and the dome of Santa Maria della Salute, dominates the composition. The artist employs fine hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the stone, the ripples of the water, and the atmospheric quality of the sky.
George Virtue was a prominent publisher of illustrated books and topographical prints, often collaborating with skilled engravers to bring works from royal and private collections to a wider audience. This print reflects the Victorian fascination with the Grand Tour and the classical beauty of Italian cities. The technical execution demonstrates the high standards of British printmaking during this period, where the goal was to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the monochromatic medium of steel engraving. The composition follows the established conventions of veduta painting, prioritising clarity, perspective, and architectural accuracy. It remains a clear example of how nineteenth-century print culture disseminated European art history to the public, allowing collectors to own reproductions of works that were otherwise inaccessible. The print is presented on high-quality paper, maintaining the crispness of the original engraved lines.
