A luminous Neo-Impressionist view of the Venetian customs house, rendered in Signac's signature mosaic-like application of colour.
Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, painted The Dogana in 1905 during one of his visits to Venice. This work demonstrates his application of the divisionist technique, where small, distinct dots of colour are placed side by side on the canvas. Rather than mixing pigments on a palette, Signac relies on the viewer's eye to blend these individual points of colour optically, creating a luminous effect that captures the unique light of the Venetian lagoon.
The composition features the Dogana da Mar, the historic customs house of Venice, positioned in the middle distance. To the right, the prow of a large sailing vessel dominates the foreground, its rigging creating a geometric contrast against the soft, atmospheric treatment of the water and sky. Signac employs a palette of warm yellows, oranges, and soft blues to convey the golden hour, a time of day he frequently explored in his maritime subjects. The tree on the left provides a vertical anchor, balancing the heavy mass of the ship on the right.
Signac moved away from the scientific rigour of Georges Seurat, adopting larger, more mosaic-like brushstrokes in his later works. This shift allowed for greater freedom in expressing the emotional quality of the scene. The water reflects the architecture and the sky, with the dots of paint creating a shimmering surface that suggests movement and depth. The Dogana remains a clear example of Signac's ability to translate the physical reality of a location into a structured arrangement of colour and light, prioritising the sensory experience of the scene over precise topographical accuracy.

Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
