A Northern Renaissance triptych depicting the deposition of Christ, noted for its anatomical precision and sombre, devotional atmosphere.
This triptych, attributed to the anonymous Flemish painter known as the Master of the Holy Blood, represents a characteristic example of early sixteenth-century Bruges painting. The central panel depicts the deposition of Christ, a subject that allowed artists of the period to explore anatomical precision and emotional gravity. The figures are arranged in a tight, sculptural grouping, with the pallid, limp body of Christ contrasted against the muted tones of the mourners' garments. The Virgin Mary, draped in deep green, supports her son, while Joseph of Arimathea stands behind, his expression one of quiet contemplation.
The side panels provide additional narrative context. On the left, a figure holds the instruments of the Passion, including the hammer and nails, rendered with sharp, clear detail. On the right, a female figure, often identified as Mary Magdalene, holds an ointment jar, her posture and attire reflecting the fashion of the Burgundian court. The background landscapes, visible through the upper sections of the panels, feature rolling hills and distant structures, typical of the period's interest in integrating human drama with the natural world.
The Master of the Holy Blood is named for a specific work in Bruges, and this triptych shares the stylistic hallmarks associated with that hand: a focus on expressive facial features, a refined application of oil paint, and a balanced, if sombre, composition. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, instead directing the viewer toward the physical reality of the scene. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume, particularly in the rendering of the torso of Christ.
