A detailed seventeenth-century oil painting depicting the departure of King Charles II from the Dutch coast in 1660.
This painting by Cornelis Beelt depicts the historical departure of King Charles II of England from the Dutch coastal village of Scheveningen on 2 June 1660. The event marked the end of the King's exile and his return to England to reclaim the throne. Beelt, a painter active in Haarlem, specialised in scenes of daily life and coastal views, often capturing the specific atmosphere of the Dutch shoreline.
The composition is dominated by the expansive, cloudy sky typical of Dutch marine painting, which occupies the upper two-thirds of the canvas. Below, the sandy beach is populated by a variety of figures, ranging from local fishermen and their families to members of the royal entourage. The presence of small boats pulled onto the sand provides a sense of scale and activity. The figures are rendered with attention to seventeenth-century dress, including dark cloaks, wide-brimmed hats, and white collars.
Beelt employs a muted palette of ochre, grey, and brown to convey the coastal environment. The light is soft and diffused, suggesting an overcast day. The arrangement of the figures creates a narrative flow, leading the eye across the beach towards the vessels waiting to transport the royal party. Unlike the grand, heroic depictions of royal departures often commissioned by the court, this work focuses on the observational aspects of the scene. It records the mundane reality of the beach, the textures of the sand, and the casual interactions of the crowd, rather than focusing solely on the monarch. The painting serves as a historical record of a specific moment in Anglo-Dutch relations, captured through the lens of a painter who favoured the quiet observation of his surroundings.
