This fragment originates from the Maesta, a monumental altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure of the Sienese School, utilised tempera and gold leaf to construct this narrative scene. The composition depicts the Dormition of the Virgin, where the Virgin Mary lies upon a bier, surrounded by the Apostles.

The visual language reflects the transition from Byzantine traditions toward a more humanised approach to religious subjects.
