A moody, expressionist depiction of the Maine wilderness, featuring a dominant mountain mass and heavy, rhythmic brushwork.
Marsden Hartley painted The Dark Mountain in 1909, a period when he resided in Maine. This work reflects his early engagement with the natural environment of his home state, filtered through the influence of Albert Pinkham Ryder. The composition features a heavy, brooding mountain mass that dominates the frame, rendered in deep, sombre tones of forest green and near-black.
In the foreground, a singular, twisted tree form acts as a framing device, drawing the eye toward the small, distant cluster of buildings nestled at the base of the slope. The sky above is treated with thick, rhythmic brushwork, where clouds are defined by dark outlines and muted, earthy pigments. This approach to the sky creates a sense of atmospheric pressure, suggesting a storm or the onset of twilight.
Hartley applied paint with a tactile, heavy hand, building up surfaces that convey the physical weight of the terrain. The work avoids the precise detail of traditional realism, opting instead for a simplified, emotive interpretation of the Maine wilderness. The colour palette remains restricted, relying on variations of green, brown, and grey to maintain a unified, moody tone. This piece belongs to a series of mountain studies that Hartley produced during his early career, demonstrating his transition toward a more subjective, modernist style. By focusing on the elemental forms of the earth and sky, he captures a specific, austere quality of the American North-East. The small scale of the human structures in relation to the massive, dark mountain suggests a perspective where nature remains the primary, overwhelming force.
