A detailed architectural study of the Daming Palace, rendered in the precise jiehua style by Yuan Dynasty master Wang Zhenpeng.
Wang Zhenpeng was a master of the jiehua, or architectural painting, tradition during the Yuan Dynasty. This work demonstrates his technical precision in rendering complex structures through the use of a ruler and fine brushwork. The composition captures the Daming Palace, a grand imperial complex, with a focus on the structural integrity of the pavilions, tiered roofs, and covered walkways.
Wang Zhenpeng served at the imperial court, where he gained recognition for his ability to depict large-scale buildings with mathematical accuracy. His style relies on thin, controlled lines to define the wooden joinery and roof tiles, creating a sense of order and scale. The inclusion of boats on the water suggests a setting near the palace grounds, adding a narrative element to the architectural study. The monochromatic palette, typical of the period, allows the viewer to focus on the geometry of the architecture rather than colour.
This print captures the fine details of the original ink on silk, preserving the delicate line work that defines the artist's approach. The composition balances the heavy, grounded forms of the palace buildings with the lighter, more fluid depiction of the vessels. By employing a high vantage point, the artist provides a clear view of the spatial relationships between the various structures. This piece is an example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with Yuan court painters, who prioritised clarity and technical skill in their depictions of imperial life. The work remains a reference for the study of historical Chinese architecture and the development of the jiehua genre.
