A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Luigi Pellegrino Scaramuccia, depicting the Crowning with Thorns after the original composition by Titian.
This etching by Luigi Pellegrino Scaramuccia depicts the biblical scene of the Crowning with Thorns. The composition is based on the famous painting by Titian, which Scaramuccia translated into the print medium during the seventeenth century. The scene shows Christ seated at the centre, surrounded by soldiers who press a crown of thorns onto his head using long reeds. The figures are arranged in a tight, dynamic cluster, reflecting the dramatic tension characteristic of the Baroque period.
Scaramuccia employs a range of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of their armour and clothing. The lighting is focused on the central figure of Christ, creating a contrast against the darker, stone-like background of the prison setting. A small bust is visible in the upper archway, a detail carried over from the original Titian composition. The print demonstrates the technical skill required to replicate the tonal qualities of an oil painting through the use of line and cross-hatching. The inscription at the base provides context regarding the print's dedication and its relationship to the original work by Titian. This piece offers a clear example of how seventeenth-century printmakers disseminated the compositions of earlier masters to a wider audience, preserving the visual language of the High Renaissance while adapting it to the aesthetic preferences of their own era.
