A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro II, depicting two elegant courtesans from the Chojiya house in a moment of quiet interaction.
This woodblock print depicts two courtesans, Karagoto and Nishikido, associated with the Chojiya house. Produced during the Edo period, the work belongs to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the representation of beautiful women. Kitagawa Utamaro II, a pupil of the famous master Kitagawa Utamaro, adopted his mentor's style and name to continue the artistic tradition of the school.
The composition features the two figures in a close, intimate arrangement. The standing courtesan leans over her seated companion, creating a sense of shared quietude. Their elaborate hairstyles are adorned with numerous hairpins, a hallmark of the high-ranking status of courtesans in the Yoshiwara district. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the facial features and the folds of the kimono, while the colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones of blue, pink, and black against the aged paper background.
Typical of Ukiyo-e prints of this era, the work prioritises a flat, graphic aesthetic over three-dimensional modelling. The focus remains on the patterns of the textiles and the graceful posture of the subjects. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy in the upper right quadrant identifies the subjects and provides a formal balance to the visual elements. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the urban merchant class in early nineteenth-century Japan, where the lives of courtesans were frequently documented through the medium of woodblock printing. The work is a representative example of the late Ukiyo-e style, maintaining the technical precision and thematic focus established by earlier masters of the genre.
