A refined woodblock print by Yanagawa Shigenobu depicting a courtesan in the elaborate costume of the mythical Dragon Princess Otohime.
This woodblock print by Yanagawa Shigenobu depicts the courtesan Hanatsuru, a figure from the Higashiōgiya brothel, dressed in the elaborate costume of Otohime, the Dragon Princess of the undersea palace. The work originates from the series 'Costume Parade of the Shinmachi Quarter in Osaka' (Ōsaka Shinmachi nerimono), which documented the theatrical processions held in the pleasure districts of Osaka during the early nineteenth century.
Shigenobu, a student and son-in-law of the master Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates a refined approach to line and colour. The figure of Hanatsuru is rendered with a focus on the textile patterns of her kimono, which features a repeating wave motif interspersed with coral-like elements. This choice of pattern serves as a visual shorthand for her role as the Dragon Princess, connecting the terrestrial world of the courtesan to the mythical realm of the sea. She holds a fan, a common accessory in ukiyo-e portraiture, which balances the composition against the circular cartouche in the upper left corner containing the series title and the subject's name.
The print employs a balanced palette, using muted tones of green, red, and indigo against a warm, neutral background. The artist avoids excessive shading, allowing the clarity of the woodblock carving to define the form of the figure and the folds of the heavy fabric. This work provides insight into the intersection of popular theatre, fashion, and the culture of the pleasure quarters in Edo-period Japan. It captures a moment of performance where the identity of the courtesan is temporarily subsumed by the character she portrays, a common theme in the artistic output of the Osaka school of printmakers.
