A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyasu, featuring a high-ranking courtesan alongside a framed landscape view of Tago Bay.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyasu depicts the courtesan Emon of the Maruebiya house. The work belongs to the series Courtesans with a Playful Group of Eight Views, a collection that merges the traditional bijin-ga genre, or pictures of beautiful women, with the landscape tradition of the Eight Views.
Kuniyasu, a student of Utagawa Toyokuni I, captures the subject in a moment of quiet poise. The courtesan is dressed in an elaborate kimono, decorated with floral motifs that contrast with the dark, muted tones of her outer garment. Her hair is styled with numerous ornamental pins, a hallmark of the high-ranking courtesan status during the Edo period.
In the upper left corner, a small cartouche displays a landscape scene of Tago Bay, providing a visual counterpoint to the figure. The composition relies on the juxtaposition between the foreground portrait and the distant, framed view. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Utagawa school, utilising clear outlines and a balanced distribution of colour. The inclusion of bamboo motifs on the screen to the right adds a sense of spatial depth to the scene. This print serves as an example of the cultural fascination with the Yoshiwara pleasure district and the idealised representation of its inhabitants. The artist employs a refined colour palette, typical of early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where pigments were applied with care to maintain the clarity of the woodblock lines. The work remains a representative piece of the late Edo period, reflecting the aesthetic values of the time through its focus on fashion, status, and the integration of nature within domestic settings.
