A monumental Neoclassical depiction of the 1804 coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine at Notre-Dame de Paris.
Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte himself, this monumental work depicts the ceremony held at Notre-Dame de Paris on 2nd December 1804. Jacques-Louis David, the premier painter of the French Empire, captures the precise moment Napoleon prepares to crown his wife, Josephine, as Empress. The composition is carefully staged to project imperial authority and legitimacy. Napoleon stands at the centre, having already placed the laurel wreath upon his own head, while Josephine kneels before him in a gesture of submission and grace.
The painting functions as a piece of state propaganda, designed to align the new regime with the grandeur of the Roman Empire. David employs a rigorous Neoclassical technique, characterised by clear outlines, balanced geometry, and a controlled application of paint. The vast interior of the cathedral is rendered with architectural precision, providing a stage for the numerous figures present, including members of the imperial family, court officials, and clergy. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, golds, and velvet greens, which serve to heighten the sense of opulence and ceremony.
David spent over two years completing this canvas, working from sketches made during the event and from life sittings with the primary figures. The inclusion of Napoleon's mother, Letizia Ramolino, in the upper gallery is a notable artistic liberty, as she did not attend the actual ceremony. This addition reflects the artist's desire to present a unified and idealised vision of the imperial family. The work remains a primary example of the scale and ambition associated with Napoleonic-era art, demonstrating the technical control and narrative clarity that defined David's career as a painter of historical events.
