This fine art print reproduces the Cope of the Virgin Mary, a primary component of the liturgical vestments associated with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Produced in the Burgundian Netherlands during the mid-fifteenth century, this garment represents the peak of medieval needlework. The design employs a radial, hexagonal grid structure, which organises a series of individual saintly figures within a coherent, architectural framework. At the centre of the hood, the Virgin Mary is depicted, surrounded by a sequence of apostles and martyrs arranged in descending tiers.
The technical execution relies on a combination of silk embroidery and gold-thread couching. The use of gold thread creates a reflective surface that shifts under light, a common feature of high-status ecclesiastical textiles from this period. The figures are rendered with a degree of naturalism typical of the Franco-Flemish style, showing careful attention to the drape of robes and the individualised expressions of the faces.
