A detailed section from Xu Yang's monumental handscroll documenting the Qianlong Emperor's 1765 southern inspection tour, focusing on the confluence of the Huai and Yellow Rivers.
This handscroll is part of a monumental series commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor to document his second southern inspection tour in 1765. Xu Yang, a court painter, spent years completing the twelve scrolls that comprise this project. Scroll Four focuses on the engineering and geographical complexity of the Huai and Yellow River confluence, a site of immense importance for water management and transport during the Qing period.
The composition employs a traditional bird's-eye perspective, allowing for a panoramic view of the riverbanks and the bustling maritime activity. The artist uses fine, controlled brushwork to delineate the wooden structures of the junks, the ripples of the water, and the varied topography of the shoreline. The palette remains restrained, relying on subtle washes of earth tones and muted greens to maintain a sense of atmospheric clarity.
Beyond the technical execution, the work functions as a historical record of imperial authority and infrastructure. The presence of the imperial fleet, depicted with precision, signals the emperor's control over the waterways. The surrounding terrain, populated with small dwellings and vegetation, provides a sense of scale and context for the grand procession. This print captures a specific section of the scroll, preserving the delicate ink work and the balanced arrangement of the original silk painting. It offers a view into the technical mastery of eighteenth-century Chinese court art, where cartographic accuracy meets aesthetic refinement.
