A classic Impressionist view of the church at Varengeville-sur-Mer, capturing the coastal light and atmosphere through textured brushwork.
Claude Monet painted this view of the church at Varengeville-sur-Mer during his stay in Normandy in 1882. The composition focuses on the architectural silhouette of the church perched upon the cliff, contrasted against the expansive sky and the sea below. Two prominent trees frame the right side of the scene, their dark forms providing a vertical anchor to the sloping terrain.
Monet employed his characteristic technique of short, broken brushstrokes to capture the atmospheric conditions of the coast. The palette relies on earthy greens for the hillside, warm ochres for the gorse in the foreground, and pale, diffused light across the horizon. By applying paint in layers, he suggests the texture of the vegetation and the movement of the air. The church itself appears as a solid, almost monolithic structure, softened by the light of the setting sun. This work reflects the artist's interest in the interplay between man-made structures and the natural environment of the French coastline.
Unlike his later series paintings, which often examined the same subject under varying conditions, this piece captures a specific moment of observation. The brushwork remains visible, inviting the viewer to observe the application of pigment rather than a smooth, finished surface. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the eye to travel from the dense foreground foliage across the grassy slope to the distant, hazy sea. This painting remains a clear example of the Impressionist approach to light and colour, prioritising the sensory experience of the location over precise topographical detail. It is a study of how light transforms the appearance of a familiar site, turning the church into a silhouette against the fading daylight.
