A detailed 1763 etching by Giuseppe Vasi depicting the Roman Forum, then known as the Campo Vaccino, featuring architectural landmarks and a numbered key.
Giuseppe Vasi was a master of the veduta, or view painting, and this etching of the Campo Vaccino, known today as the Roman Forum, demonstrates his technical precision. Produced in 1763, the work captures the site during a period when it functioned as a cattle market, hence the name Campo Vaccino. Vasi employs a high vantage point to survey the ruins, allowing the viewer to observe the relationship between the ancient structures and the eighteenth-century urban fabric of Rome.
The composition is anchored by the Arch of Septimius Severus on the left and the Temple of Saturn on the right. Beyond these structures, the Colosseum rises in the distance, providing a sense of scale to the sprawling site. Vasi uses fine, controlled lines to define the architectural details, from the weathered stone of the columns to the textures of the surrounding buildings. The sky is rendered with rhythmic, parallel hatching that suggests a clear, expansive atmosphere.
At the base of the print, Vasi includes a detailed cartouche containing a dedication and a numbered key. This key identifies the various monuments visible in the scene, reflecting the educational purpose of his topographical works. The presence of small figures, including pedestrians and a horse-drawn carriage, provides a sense of daily life within the monumental setting. This etching is part of Vasi's larger project to document the city of Rome, a task that required immense patience and observation. The work offers a clear record of the site before the extensive archaeological excavations of the nineteenth century altered its appearance. It remains a primary source for understanding the topography of Rome during the mid-eighteenth century.
