A masterful etching from Whistler's Venice series, capturing a dark alleyway through precise tonal contrasts and atmospheric line work.
The Beggars is a notable etching from James McNeill Whistler's First Venice Set, produced during his stay in Italy between 1879 and 1880. This work captures a dark, narrow Venetian alleyway, illuminated by a single overhead lantern. The composition relies on the contrast between the deep shadows of the passage and the bright, sun-drenched courtyard visible in the distance.
In the foreground, two figures stand in the gloom, their forms emerging from the darkness through Whistler's precise use of line and tone. The artist employs drypoint to add texture and depth to the shadows, creating a sense of atmosphere that defines the damp, enclosed space. Further back, other figures move through the light, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the city.
Whistler's approach to this scene avoids sentimentality. Instead, he focuses on the interplay of light and architecture. The etching demonstrates his mastery of the medium, particularly in how he balances the heavy, ink-laden areas of the walls with the delicate, sparse lines used to suggest the distant buildings. The work is part of a series that helped re-establish the etching as a serious artistic medium in the late nineteenth century. By choosing to depict the less glamorous, hidden corners of Venice, Whistler provides a view of the city that differs from the typical tourist imagery of the period. The print remains a study in tonal control and spatial arrangement, reflecting the artist's interest in the aesthetic qualities of urban decay and the specific light conditions found in Venetian architecture.
