Raoul Dufy painted this scene of the Normandy coast in 1905. At this stage in his career, Dufy was heavily influenced by the work of Henri Matisse and the Fauvist movement. The composition captures the leisure culture of the early twentieth century, focusing on the social activity of the beach rather than a traditional maritime view.

The painting depicts a wooden pier extending into the sea, crowded with figures holding parasols. Below, on the sand, a similar gathering of holidaymakers is arranged in a rhythmic, almost decorative fashion. Dufy uses a light, airy palette dominated by blues, creams, and soft pinks to convey the atmosphere of a summer day. The brushwork is loose and expressive, prioritising the capture of light and movement over precise anatomical detail.

This work reflects the artist's early interest in the seaside subjects that would occupy him throughout his life.
