A detailed fine art print of Paolo Uccello's masterpiece, depicting the organised chaos of the Battle of San Romano with geometric precision.
This work is one of three panels commissioned by the Bartolini Salimbeni family to commemorate the Florentine victory over the Sienese at the Battle of San Romano in 1432. Paolo Uccello, a painter obsessed with the mathematical application of perspective, constructs the scene with a rigid, almost stage-like geometry. The composition is dominated by the collision of cavalry, where lances and horses create a web of intersecting lines that guide the eye across the panel.
Uccello employs a flattened sense of space, despite his reputation for perspective studies. The figures appear as if they are arranged on a shallow shelf, with the background landscape rising abruptly behind the combatants. The horses, rendered in varied colours including white, chestnut, and grey, are depicted in stylised poses that suggest a choreographed dance rather than the chaotic reality of combat. The armour of the knights is painted with meticulous attention to the metallic sheen, reflecting the artist's interest in light and surface texture.
In the centre, the figure of Niccolò da Tolentino leads the charge, his hat a distinctive feature of the Florentine fashion of the period. The ground is littered with broken lances and fallen equipment, which serve as geometric markers to define the depth of the field. The background, featuring a hilly terrain and small figures of hunters, provides a contrast to the dense, claustrophobic action of the foreground. This panel, now housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, remains a primary example of the experimental nature of Early Renaissance art, where the desire for scientific accuracy meets the decorative traditions of the International Gothic style.
