A dramatic 1866 history painting by Bertalan Székely depicting the aftermath of the 1526 Battle of Mohács with intense lighting and sombre detail.
Bertalan Székely, a prominent figure in 19th-century Hungarian art, produced this dramatic depiction of the Battle of Mohács in 1866. The work captures the aftermath of the 1526 engagement, a conflict that resulted in the collapse of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom and the beginning of Ottoman occupation.
Székely focuses on the human cost of the defeat rather than the tactical manoeuvres of the armies. The foreground is occupied by fallen soldiers and horses, rendered with a sombre attention to the physical reality of the battlefield. The composition uses a low vantage point, which forces the viewer to confront the immediate casualties. The figures are partially obscured by tall, marshy vegetation, suggesting the chaotic and muddy conditions of the site near the Danube.
In the background, the artist employs a high-contrast lighting scheme. A golden, atmospheric glow emanates from the horizon, silhouetting the remaining cavalry forces engaged in the distance. This contrast between the dark, detailed foreground and the luminous, hazy background creates a sense of depth and emotional weight. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, deep shadows, and flashes of crimson, which draw the eye across the scene of carnage.
As a history painter, Székely sought to interpret national identity through the lens of past trauma. His approach avoids the idealised heroism often found in academic art of the period. Instead, he presents a visceral, grounded view of history. The painting remains a significant example of Hungarian Romanticism, reflecting the artist's technical skill in handling light and his interest in the psychological dimensions of historical events. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil painting, maintaining the balance between the foreground details and the expansive, turbulent sky.
