Peeter Snayers, a Flemish painter active in Brussels, specialised in the depiction of military engagements. This work captures the Battle of Fleurus, which occurred on 29 August 1622 during the Thirty Years' War. The composition employs a high vantage point, a common technique in seventeenth-century battle painting, allowing the viewer to observe the tactical arrangement of troops across the field.

In the foreground, the chaos of cavalry combat unfolds with individual soldiers and horses rendered in active poses.
