A 1935 oil painting by Maximilien Luce depicting the quiet riverbanks of the Seine near Rolleboise with expressive, fluid brushwork.
Maximilien Luce painted this view of the Seine near Rolleboise in 1935. By this stage in his career, Luce had moved away from the strict scientific application of colour theory that defined his earlier Neo-Impressionist work. Instead, he adopted a more fluid, expressive brushwork that prioritised the atmospheric quality of the French countryside.
The composition features a path winding along the riverbank, framed by trees that lean towards the water. The Seine occupies the centre of the frame, reflecting the light from an overcast sky. Two small figures are positioned near the water, providing a sense of scale to the natural surroundings. Luce uses a palette of earthy greens, ochres, and muted blues to capture the quietude of the river valley. The paint application is loose and gestural, allowing the texture of the canvas to contribute to the overall effect of the scene.
Luce spent significant time in Rolleboise during his later years, finding inspiration in the rural quiet of the Yvelines department. This work reflects his interest in the changing light and the physical presence of the river. Unlike his earlier urban scenes of Paris, which often focused on industrial labour, this piece demonstrates his focus on the natural environment. The brushwork remains energetic, yet the overall mood is one of calm observation. The painting serves as a record of the artist's personal connection to the region, capturing a specific moment of light and shadow on the riverbank.
