Maximilien Luce painted this view of the Seine near Rolleboise in 1935. By this stage in his career, Luce had moved away from the strict scientific application of colour theory that defined his earlier Neo-Impressionist work. Instead, he adopted a more fluid, expressive brushwork that prioritised the atmospheric quality of the French countryside.
The composition features a path winding along the riverbank, framed by trees that lean towards the water. The Seine occupies the centre of the frame, reflecting the light from an overcast sky.
