A 1619 Dutch political broadside by Claes Jansz. Visscher depicting the exile of Arminian clergy following the Synod of Dort.
This print by Claes Jansz. Visscher, titled 'The Arminian Decree: Farmer's Talk over the Arminian Decree', serves as a visual document of the political and religious tensions in the Netherlands during the early seventeenth century. Produced in 1619, the work captures the aftermath of the Synod of Dort, where the Remonstrants, or Arminians, were condemned. The composition is divided into two distinct sections. The upper portion features an etching of a procession of wagons carrying the exiled Arminian clergy away from the region. The lower portion consists of a printed dialogue between two farmers, Joost and Kees, who discuss the implications of the decree and the departure of the ministers.
Visscher, a prolific publisher and engraver based in Amsterdam, utilised this format to disseminate political commentary to a broad audience. The imagery is direct, focusing on the physical act of expulsion, while the text provides a vernacular perspective on the theological disputes that divided the Dutch Republic. The inclusion of a numbered list identifying the individuals in the wagons adds a layer of reportage to the print, transforming it into a piece of contemporary news media. The style is characteristic of Dutch broadsides of the period, combining graphic illustration with dense columns of typography to inform the public of state affairs. The print reflects the climate of the time, where religious orthodoxy was enforced through state power, and dissenters were forced into exile. By presenting the event through the lens of commoners, Visscher invites the viewer to consider the human cost of these high-level political decisions. The work remains a valuable resource for understanding the intersection of print culture, religious conflict, and public opinion in the Dutch Golden Age.
