A detailed 18th-century Spanish still life featuring a collection of fruit, bread, and kitchenware arranged on a stone ledge.
Luis Meléndez, a master of the Spanish still life tradition, produced this work during his tenure as a painter for the Spanish royal household. The composition presents a collection of foodstuffs arranged upon a stone ledge, set against a backdrop of foliage and a distant, atmospheric view. Meléndez demonstrates his technical precision through the rendering of varied textures: the porous skin of the melon, the soft fuzz of the peaches, the crisp folds of the linen cloth, and the reflective surface of the copper vessel.
The arrangement follows a deliberate structure, balancing the weight of the wicker baskets and the copper pot against the foreground elements of fruit and bread. The light source, coming from the left, creates distinct shadows that define the volume of each object. Meléndez was known for his ability to elevate humble, everyday items into subjects of rigorous study. His approach avoids the moralising tone often found in Northern European still life painting, focusing instead on the physical reality of the objects themselves.
The inclusion of the open melon, with its seeds and fibrous interior exposed, serves as a demonstration of the artist's skill in capturing organic detail. The grapes, piled high in a basket, provide a sense of abundance, while the bread rolls and simple ceramic plates ground the scene in a domestic context. The background, which transitions from the dark, dense foliage to a lighter, blue-toned sky, provides a sense of space that is unusual for the genre. This painting is part of a series commissioned for the Prince of Asturias, later King Charles IV, intended to represent the natural bounty of Spain. The work remains a primary example of the artist's capacity to combine scientific observation with a refined aesthetic sensibility.
