Frederic Remington produced this work in 1890, a period when his focus shifted toward the harsh realities of the American frontier. The composition depicts a small group of cavalrymen caught in a sudden, violent encounter. The central figure, a soldier on horseback, appears to have been struck, his posture slumping as he loses control of his mount. In the background, another rider signals with a raised rifle, suggesting the presence of unseen adversaries.
Remington utilised a high-key palette to capture the intense, bleached light of the desert environment. The shadows are sharp and distinct, indicating a midday sun that offers no respite to the figures. The rocky, uneven terrain is rendered with precise brushwork, grounding the scene in a specific, unforgiving geography. Unlike his earlier, more heroic depictions of the West, this painting focuses on the vulnerability of the individual soldier. The discarded rifle in the foreground serves as a stark indicator of the suddenness of the conflict.
