A masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, this 1488 panel painting by Domenico Ghirlandaio captures the Adoration of the Magi with exceptional detail.
Painted in 1488, this work by Domenico Ghirlandaio represents the height of Florentine Quattrocento painting. The composition follows a traditional iconographic structure, placing the Virgin and Child at the centre, surrounded by the three Magi and their extensive retinue. Ghirlandaio demonstrates his mastery of narrative clarity, balancing the sacred figures with a detailed background that includes both a classical architectural structure and a distant, atmospheric harbour scene.
The painting is notable for its inclusion of contemporary portraiture, a practice common in Ghirlandaio's commissions. The figures are rendered with precise attention to their garments, textures, and individual expressions. Above the central scene, four angels hold a scroll featuring musical notation, adding a layer of auditory symbolism to the visual composition. The date, inscribed in Roman numerals at the top right, confirms the period of its creation during the artist's most productive decade in Florence.
Technically, the work employs tempera on panel, allowing for the crisp lines and clear colour transitions characteristic of the period. The use of light is consistent across the scene, providing a sense of spatial depth that draws the viewer from the foreground figures into the expansive landscape beyond. The inclusion of the ox and the donkey, alongside the kneeling Magi, adheres to the established theological conventions of the time while allowing the artist to display his skill in anatomical and material representation. This piece remains a primary example of the workshop practices that defined the artistic output of late fifteenth-century Florence, where technical precision and narrative organisation were held in high regard.
