A striking 1794 ukiyo-e woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the dramatic expressions of two kabuki actors in a classic okubi-e portrait.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts two kabuki actors, Segawa Tomisaburo II and Nakamura Manyo, in their respective roles as Yadorigi and the servant Wakakusa. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, intense period of activity for the artist, who created approximately 140 prints within a ten-month span. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portraits common in the ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features and expressions of his subjects, capturing the specific psychological intensity of the actors on stage.
The composition features the two figures set against a dark, mica-dusted background, a technique that provides a metallic sheen and draws focus to the actors. Segawa Tomisaburo II, on the right, is rendered with a refined, elongated face, while Nakamura Manyo, on the left, is depicted with softer, more rounded features. The contrast between their expressions and postures reflects the dramatic tension of the theatrical scene they inhabit. The use of colour is restrained, relying on a palette of muted tones, which allows the graphic quality of the lines to dominate the visual experience.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture remains a subject of study for its departure from the conventions of his contemporaries. By focusing on the individual quirks of the performers, he provided a record of the kabuki theatre that feels immediate and unvarnished. This print is an example of the okubi-e, or large-head portrait, a format that prioritises the actor's visage to convey character and emotion. The work demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock printing process, with clean lines and careful registration of the colour blocks.
