A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro featuring two kabuki actors in traditional attire, rendered with elegant lines and a muted colour palette.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicts two kabuki actors, Sanogawa Ichimatsu and Nakamura Tomijuro, in a composition that reflects the conventions of the Torii school. The Torii lineage held a dominant position in the production of theatrical imagery during the mid-eighteenth century, often focusing on the exaggerated poses and stylised features of popular performers.
In this work, the figures stand in a symmetrical arrangement, their bodies angled towards a central brazier. The artist employs a calligraphic line quality to define the contours of the actors' robes and their expressive facial features. The garments are decorated with floral motifs, specifically morning glories, which provide a repeating pattern across the fabric. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones of green, grey, and soft red to maintain visual balance.
This print belongs to the genre of yakusha-e, or actor prints, which served as promotional material for the kabuki theatre. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions and seals identifies the subjects and the artist, adhering to the standard format for prints of this period. The composition is notably flat, prioritising the decorative arrangement of the figures over three-dimensional space. The focus on the actors' specific roles and their physical presence on the stage provides insight into the visual culture of Edo-period Japan. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for multi-block printing, where each colour layer is applied with careful alignment to create the final image.
