This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga captures a specific moment from the kabuki play Tamagushi Yosooi Soga, performed at the Ichimura Theater in Edo during the first month of 1747. The composition features the actors Otani Ryuzaemon II, cast as the character Kajiwara Genta, and Arashi Tominosuke I, appearing as Oiso no Tora.
Shigenaga, a significant figure in the early development of the Ukiyo-e genre, was known for his technical experimentation and his role as a teacher to later masters such as Harunobu. This work is a benizuri-e, or crimson-printed picture, which typically utilised a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to the paper. The figures are rendered with the characteristic stylised grace of the mid-eighteenth century, focusing on the specific costumes and theatrical gestures associated with the Soga brothers' revenge narrative, a popular theme in kabuki theatre.
The print incorporates extensive calligraphic text, which provides context regarding the performance, the actors, and the theatre.
