A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, depicting the kabuki actor Tsutsui Kichijuro in a traditional onnagata role.
This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Tsutsui Kichijuro in a female role, a common practice in the Edo period known as onnagata. Torii Kiyomasu I, a central figure of the Torii school, specialised in these theatrical portraits. The Torii school maintained a close association with the kabuki theatres of Edo, and their prints functioned as promotional material for the performers.
The composition utilises the characteristic 'tan-e' style, where hand-applied pigments, specifically red lead (tan), provide contrast against the stark black ink lines. The actor is shown in a graceful, slightly curved posture, with the voluminous kimono sleeves creating a sense of movement. The fabric is decorated with cloud motifs and floral patterns, which were typical of the period's textile designs. The bold, calligraphic lines define the contours of the figure, while the facial features remain stylised, focusing on the expressive quality of the performance rather than individual likeness.
As an example of early Ukiyo-e, this work demonstrates the technical limitations and aesthetic priorities of the time. The paper has aged to a warm, neutral tone, which complements the faded red and black ink. The print includes the signature of the artist and the publisher's seal, which were standard elements in the production of these ephemeral works. The focus remains on the theatricality of the subject, capturing the essence of the kabuki stage through a simplified, graphic lens. This print offers a view into the visual culture of 18th-century Japan, where the theatre and the print market were linked in their pursuit of popular entertainment.
