A 1718 woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I featuring the actor Sanjo Kantaro II in a kabuki role, rendered in the traditional tan-e style.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the actor Sanjo Kantaro II in the role of Oshichi, a character from the play Nanakusa Fukki Soga. The performance took place at the Ichimura Theater in Edo during the first month of 1718. As a primary figure in the Torii school, Kiyonobu I specialised in yakusha-e, or actor prints, which served as promotional material for the kabuki theatre.
The composition employs the characteristic bold, sweeping lines associated with the Torii style. These lines define the figures against a sparse background, focusing attention on the dramatic posture and costume of the actor. The print is an example of tan-e, a style of hand-coloured woodblock print where orange-red pigment (tan) was applied to the monochrome ink impression. The colour palette remains limited, relying on the contrast between the black ink outlines and the muted yellow and orange tones applied to the garments and architectural elements.
Kiyonobu I was instrumental in establishing the visual language of the early Ukiyo-e period. His work captures the energy of the kabuki stage, prioritising the theatrical presence of the performer over anatomical realism. The figures are arranged in a dynamic, slightly flattened space, typical of early eighteenth-century printmaking. The inclusion of the actor's crest and the specific theatrical context provides a record of the cultural life in Edo. This print offers a view into the aesthetic conventions of the time, where the graphic quality of the line work and the economy of colour created a distinct visual identity for the burgeoning print market.
