This triptych by Toyohara Kunichika captures a dramatic moment from the Kabuki theatre, featuring the actor Nakamura Shikan IV in the role of Jinriki Tamigoro. Kunichika, a student of Kunisada, was known for his mastery of the actor print genre during the Meiji period. His work often reflects the heightened emotional states and exaggerated physicality characteristic of the stage.
The composition is divided into three panels, creating a wide, cinematic view of the scene. The figures are depicted with intense expressions, their bodies adorned with elaborate, full-body tattoos that were a common motif in depictions of heroic or rogue characters in Japanese popular culture. These tattoos, featuring dragons, eagles, and floral patterns, contrast with the stark, dark background, drawing the viewer's eye to the central figures.
