A striking 1794 Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, depicting the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozo III in a character role.
Tōshūsai Sharaku remains one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of Japanese art. Active for only ten months between 1794 and 1795, he produced a series of striking portraits of Kabuki actors that departed from the idealised depictions common in the Ukiyo-e tradition. This print captures the actor Ichikawa Yaozo III in the role of the sparrow seller Bunji Yasukata.
Sharaku employs a distinctive approach to characterisation, focusing on the specific facial features and psychological intensity of the performer. Rather than presenting a generic mask of beauty, the artist emphasises the actor's unique expression, posture, and physical presence. The composition is stark, set against a plain background that directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figure. The actor wears a kimono decorated with a pattern of sparrows and bamboo leaves, which serves as a visual reference to his character's trade.
The line work is precise and controlled, typical of the high-quality woodblock printing techniques of the Edo period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, soft ochres, and touches of red to define the costume and accessories. This print belongs to a larger body of work that documented the theatrical culture of 18th-century Edo. Sharaku's output was initially met with mixed reactions, as his unflinching realism contrasted with the expectations of contemporary audiences who preferred more stylised representations. Today, these prints are valued for their graphic clarity and the artist's ability to capture the fleeting energy of the stage.
