A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Sadamasu, capturing the kabuki actor Arashi Tokusaburō in a dramatic role.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Sadamasu depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Tokusaburō in the role of the female gallant, or onnadate, known as Ohashi. Sadamasu, also known as Kunimasu, was a significant figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, which operated in the Osaka and Kyoto regions. Unlike the Edo-based artists who often focused on idealised beauty, Kamigata artists frequently prioritised the specific features and individual expressions of the actors they portrayed.
The composition is a close-up portrait, or okubi-e, which allows for a focus on the actor's facial features and the elaborate styling of the hair. The figure is dressed in a patterned kimono, featuring a bold floral motif against a dark ground, contrasted with striped fabric. The inclusion of a small pipe, or kiseru, held near the shoulder, provides a subtle narrative element often associated with the onnadate character type, who was typically portrayed as a woman of independent spirit and strength.
The print exhibits the technical precision characteristic of the Osaka school, with clean lines and a balanced use of colour. The background remains relatively neutral, allowing the figure to occupy the visual space without distraction. Calligraphic inscriptions appear in the upper portion of the print, providing context regarding the actor and the specific theatrical role. This work offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of nineteenth-century Japan, where the popularity of kabuki actors drove a demand for high-quality portraits that captured the essence of their performances on stage. The print remains a clear example of the regional stylistic differences that defined the Ukiyo-e tradition during this period.
